Inside the park, run by the forest department.
Basic rooms, simple food, no frills and no wifi. What you get instead is waking up inside the forest, with alarm calls at night and first light on the meadow before anyone else arrives. Limited rooms and strict booking rules — these need planning well ahead. Available only in some parks.
The dependable middle, close to the gate.
Clean rooms with hot water and reliable power, a proper dining room, early breakfast on safari days and usually a resident naturalist. Most travellers stay here and are glad they did. Quality varies a lot between properties — this is where our advice earns its keep.
More space, better food, stronger naturalists.
Larger rooms or cottages, a pool, good food, and naturalists who brief you properly before and after each drive. Usually well-placed for the main gates. A sensible choice if you're travelling a long way for a short trip and want it to count.
Design, service and privacy at the top end.
Suites or tented villas, private dining, spa, personal naturalist and often a private vehicle. Available near the better-known parks. Best booked early, as these properties are small and sell out for peak dates far in advance.
Which side of the park you stay on decides how long you drive before your drive.
Two main stay areas: the Khatia/Kisli side and the Mukki side, on opposite ends of a very large park. Staying on the wrong side means a long pre-dawn transfer to your allocated gate, so accommodation and zone should be decided together.
Most properties cluster around Tala village near the main gate, which keeps morning transfers short. Quieter options sit further out towards the Magdhi and Khitauli gates.
The Turia gate side has the widest choice of lodges and is the easiest run from Nagpur airport. The Maharashtra-side gates are quieter with fewer properties.
Moharli is the busiest and best-served gate area; Kolara on the northern side is quieter. Buffer gates each have their own small clusters of lodges, which is useful when core permits are gone.
Almost everything sits along the Ranthambore Road belt out of Sawai Madhopur, so gate transfers are short. Choice here runs from simple hotels to some of the most designed properties in Indian wildlife travel.
Two very different options. Forest lodges inside Dhikala put you in the middle of the grassland but must be booked well ahead and are basic. Outside, the Ramnagar and Dhikuli river belt has the widest choice, with Bijrani and Jhirna gates within reach.
Kohora, the central gateway, has the most accommodation and the shortest transfers to the central range. The western and eastern ranges have their own smaller, quieter clusters.
Properties line the reservoir on the Karapur and Beeramballi side, most within easy reach of the Nagarhole gates, and many with boat safari access from the property itself.
Stays are spread across the granite hills between Jawai Bandh and Bera rather than around a single gate, from simple guesthouses to some of the most striking luxury camps in the country. Location decides which hills you'll be exploring.
